Why Finding Ways To Express Yourself Matters

Why Finding Ways To Express Yourself Matters

By Kari Ratliff

These days there is an almost unlimited supply of advice on how to communicate effectively with your spouse, colleagues and boss. These fall broadly under the theme of finding ways to express yourself more successfully. On a more subtle level self-expression can be regarded as a way to share with the world those aspects of yourself that you most value. These things are linked; people who are living a life that allows them to display their skills and abilities will naturally develop the self-esteem which leads to good communication.

In contemporary society it can often seem that the emphasis is on making the individual fit in with the community and fulfill a useful role. Even though every person has unique gifts, personality and strengths it can be hard to find ways to express yourself in a conformist modern world.

If you are one of the fortunate few who from an early age shows artistic or musical abilities then it is likely that your loved ones will encourage you to develop your gifts. For the majority of people who fail to display early genius in a recognized area finding a means of self-expression may be more difficult.

At some stages in your life you may find yourself stuck in situations that make you unhappy; a difficult job, or a less than satisfactory home environment for instance. At such times it is normal that your self-confidence will be lowered and it can take time to make the necessary long-term changes. It is during such periods that it is most vital to find some space to do things that meet at least some of your personal needs.

Having people around you who believe in you and your unique abilities will help you to develop your skills and creativity. The way you are perceived by others will affect the way you see yourself. Try to spend time with those who make it clear that they value you for who you are.

Your own attitude to undertaking new things will also have a major effect; fear of failure can easily become a reason for not trying. It has been suggested that people who take themselves too seriously are far less likely to be creatively successful than those who can learn to value the journey more than the arrival and who can accept set-backs with good humor and perspective.

Your unique self can be expressed in hundreds of different ways. You may find your greatest satisfaction in a job that allows you to use the abilities that you take pride in. The idea that creative expression is limited to art, music or other obvious routes is a false one. It may be that your greatest gifts lie in your abilities to forge solid relationships or contribute to your community; perhaps you will demonstrate your inner self in the way you create a harmonious home or raise your children.

You will be a happier person if you find ways to express yourself. You may not change the world or leave some unique legacy of artistic or musical merit but you will have the satisfaction of a life well lived and those around you will value you for your unique contribution to the world.
