Pages from this LDS Film #000362 of research done during the
1940's by Francis D. Brinton on the descendants of John and Mary
Starr--the Quaker Starrs of PA--were sent by Lillie Harris August
1994. The following is a "rough" transcription--bold face print
ing is mine -- Linda Sparks Starr.
Silas Starr of Newton County Georgia, Son of Henry & Mary Starr
of Maryland and afterwards of middle Georgia was born in Maryland
7th NOV 1782. In his early boyhood he removed with his parents
to Georgia and on 4 DEC 1806 married Elizabeth Pinkston who was
born on 10 AUG 1780 and Deceased 3 MAY 1856. Silas deceased on
17 DEC 1857. He was one of the Earliest settlers in north
central part of Georgia in the village of Starrsville, a settle
ment of about one hundred inhabitants was named in his honor.
The following obituary notice appeared in a methodist journal of
the time will fully set forth his character in the estimate in
which he was held by his "associates. [page 290]

Obituary "from a Methodist Journal
Silas Starr was born in Maryland the 7th Nov 1782, and died in
Newton County, Georgia 17th DEC 1857. Blessed with a fine con
stitution and leading a temperate and virtuous life, he survived
the alloted period of three-score years-and-ten; and after rais
ing up a family of children "in the admonition of the Lord", more
than half of whom predeceased him to the home of the blest--he
gradually sunk under the accumulated weight of years and calmly
fell asleep in Jesus. In all the relationships of life he was a
model man. Although endowed with faculties which by culture
would have rendered him distinguished, he chose in accordance
with his unobtrusive nature to pass quietly through the world,
serving his generation "by the will of God." He was conservative
in his feelings, but firm in his disapprobation of all vice and
error, whether in church or State. As a citizen he was an orna
ment to the community in which he lived; and the influence that
he exerted for good order, by his virtuous precept and "ex
ample, will be felt for many days to come. He enjoyed the
highest esteem and confidence of his neighbors, as well as of all
who knew him and al- [page 291]
ways reciprocated their kindness with the utmost delight. He
ever lent a listening ear to the "of the needy, and ex
tended a helping hand to supply their wants. And the unfortunate
"or county never besought his charities in vain. In
the vigor of manhood he gave his heart to God and joined the M.
E. Church. His Christian career was characterized "for his piety, like "deepened and widened as it ad vanced, until it became fathomless as the ocean. He was faithful
in the discharge of his duties, and punctual in his attendance
upon all the ministrations of the sanctuary, until entirely dis
abled by disease. He was liberal in his support of the ministry
as well as of all the great enterprises of the church, and his
house was the preacher's home. He lived the life of a christian
and died "the death of the righteous." His virtues will "all eulogy and be a rich legacy to his posterity." J.K. L.

The children of Silas and Elizabeth (Pinkston) Starr were as fol
lows:
1. Mary born 11 JUN 1808, died 17 Mch 1845 married George W.
Leak of Newton Co. Georgia and left three children, James, Wil
liam B. and Benjamin A. Leak. James died before the civil war
and both the latter lost their lives in the Confederate Service.
They were both unmarried.
2 John K. born 16 (?)Nov 1809 died 13 NOV 1843 married Mary
(?)Lunslain of Covington, GA, left no issue.
3 Eliza born 1 Sept 1811 died 9 JUN 1886 married George W. Leak
of Newton Co. Ga and had two sons, John K. Leak and Silas Wesley
Leak. The former was a talented methodist preacher and President
of Andrew Female College at Cuthbert, Ga. He married Alice Cul
lar Abban died in 1862 without issue. The latter son was a suc
cessful medical practitioner removed to Panola Co. Texas. He
married (?)Veslons Boring and died about 1870 leavng no issue.
4 Harriet A. born 7 Jany 1814 maried Major. A. M. Ramsay of Wal
ton Co. Ga died 1881 resided in Sunnyside GA. They had one son
Augustus M. unmarried when was killed at Sharpsburg, MD 1862.
Three daughters. (1) Ophalia who is deceased (2) Georgia (3)
Virginia, all unmarried. [page 293]
5 Silas Henry born 3 OCT 1815 married 12 SEP 1857 Ann June/Jane
Dabney for his family see further
6 Eugenia C. born 10 AUG 1817 married William G. Leak of Pike
Co. Georiga who was killed in the battle of Atlanta July 22,
1864. They had two sons and two daughters. The oldest James
Rufus was killed while gallently carrying the colors of the 7th
Regiment, Georgia at Malvern Hill, VA. The second son William
Cofey Leak now (1881) lives at Social Circle, Georgia & is a mer
chant. Their daughter Lizzie K. married M. (?)Bouphonsia & lives
in Rockdale Co. GA where they now (1881) reside.
7 Euphemia Crawford born 10 FEB 1820 died 22 JUN 1847, unmarried
8 Emily born 10 DEC 1821 died 18 DEC 1821
9 Lilly (?) Barnst born 11 APR 1823 married Lemon M. Brown of
Newton Co. GA where they now reside. They have three/two sons &
three daughters. The eldest son Dr. Henry A. Brown unmarried is
a practitioner of medicine in Jasper Co. Ga. Lorenzo A. Brown
unmarried lives in Lynchburg, VA where he general passenger agent
for the Baltimore & Ohio R R. One daughter Mollie is deceased
and two single daughters Susie and Hennie C. reside with their

Silas Henry Starr, 2nd Son of Silas & Elizabeth (Pinkston) Starr
of Starrsville, Georgia was born in Wilkes Co. GA 3 OCT 1815 and
when about five years old removed with his parents to Starrsville
where he has since resided. Before the civil war he was a mer
chant and farmer, but has since devoted himself to the latter
business. One 12 SEP 1837 he married Ann Jane Dabney who was
born 12 SEP 1807. [The note, written in another handwriting,
errs--"2nd son of Henry and Mary".]
Their children are
1. Silas Henry Jr. born 25 AUG 1838 married 18 JUN 1868 Fannie
A. Tarver in Jefferson, Texas. They have two daughters. 1.
Alice Kate born in Jefferson, Texas 28 NOV 1870. 2 Clara Hor
tense born at Starrsville, GA 29 JUL 1872, died Sept 1873. His
wife Fannie (?)Ahanny deceased 3 NOV 1873, he married on 8 Jany
1880 Fannie M. Butner of Powder Springs, Cobb Co. GA. Silas
Henry Starr Jr. enlisted in 1861 with Third GA Regiment which was
the first to march from GA to VA. He served with credit and He
was promoted to Captain and Ordinance Officer of Wright's old GA
Brigade, which at the close of the war Gen. Sorrell's Brigade,
Mahone's Division, A.P. Hill's Corps, Army of Northern VA. [page

2 Tyre Adolphus born 19 DEC 1842. He served in the confederate
army with credit and was 1st Lieut. 42nd Georgia Regiment, Jos.
E. Johnston's Army. He is now a merchant.
3 Mary E. born 16 OCT 1843 died 29 Jany 1877, maried 7 Sept 1865
to Grant D. Heard. They had two daughters: 1. Cora Lee born 20
March 1868 and 2 Anne Lizzie born 27 March 1877
4 Leonessies A. born 7 OCT 1850. He is a farmer and conducts
altho "saw mill and a cotton gin at Starrsville, Newton

Asa Starr of Son of Henry and Mary Starr of
Maryland afterwards of middle Georgia was born
He had one son Richard C. who married Martha J. Phelps. He had
one Son and four daughters, viz (1) Rosa who is deceased. She
married "Brown. (2) Angie E. who married 1st "McMeshnise of Jasper Co. GA and 2nd Thomas Goodman of the Same where they now reside and have five (sic) (3) Virginia married
James Kirkpatrick & has deceased (4) Joseph A. married Mattie El
liott of Newton Co. Geo. & lives near Starrsville (5) Lilly
married "Jones of Jasper Co. GA where they now (1881) reside
Richard C. Starr died in the Confederate Service and his widow
resides with her son Joseph at near Starrsville.
Silas H. Starr of Starrsville Georgia "of
the southern members of the family. As far as I know the Starr
famly are "for their uprightness and fair dealing with
their fellow men. They are good citizens (?)beloved and conserva-
tive in their "both in "& religion. They belong to
the Jefferson school of Democracy. The large majority of them
are methodists though a few belong to other denominations. [p297]
Joshua Starr of Wilkes Co. Georgia, Son of Henry Starr of
Maryland who removed to middle Georgia. Joshua resided in Wilkes
County Ga where he raised a family of perhaps five sons who each
have families around them. Joshua Starr is described by his

John Starr the oldest of this name in America probably settled on
lands in Maryland near the Susquehanna which he had purchased of
Lord Baltimore. He disappeared from "on June about
1718 and does again appear as of that locality until 1736 when he
was subpeoned as witness as before stated. It is probable that
"was John "a Indian until
1753 he had a son Henry perhaps others who was born in Maryland
and settled in the South. [page 269]

(?)"Mrs Bathsheba Ogletree died in Atlanta Georgia June 2, 1881.
She was born January 1810 in Wilkes County, GA married to Samuel
Ogletree in 1825. There is no record of the time of her conver
sion, but it was early in life. She was the daughter of the Rev.
Joshua Starr and sister of the late Rev. J. W. Starr of the
Alabama Conference. Sister Ogletree, true to the faith of her
fathers, manifested the same attachment to methodism so charac
teristic of the large family of that rank. She was left a widow
some" years ago, with a large family, now in
Straightened circumstances; but nobly did she battle with adverse
winds and waves. With the assistance of her son J. P. Ogletree,
then quite a youth, she succeeded at obtaining a home of her own,
raising her children free from embarrassment, highly respected,
loving and dutiful to their mother, and advancing to manhood and
womanhood within the sacred pales of the church. Many have done
nobly and sister Ogletree was not the least among them. She out
lived nearly all the members of her father's family. The soil of
Texas and Alabama contains the sacred dust of two of her brothers
who died in the tineracy, leaving behind them the "of good

Evangelical work. The piety of our deceased sister was uniform
hers was an every day religion--not "but like the con
stant shining light brightening on to the perfect day. She
walked with God, carried all her sorrows to Him and from Him a

Henry of Starr of Maryland "highly probable son of Joshua the
first of that name, and removed from Maryland and thence to
middle Georgia with his family. His grandson Dr. Elijah Fletcher
Starr of Nacooches, White Co. GA states that he had six or seven
sons Joshua, Benjamin, Silas, Elijah, Samuel, John and proably
Caleb [note asks "what happened to Asa?] none of whom were living
in 1872.
Samuel Starr of Lumpkin GA states that his grandfather John Starr
of Beech Island related that when he left Maryland he had there
five brothers and two sisters. The descendants of this family
now in the South are described as all strictly honest and good
citizens. [page 284]
John Starr of Beech Island S. Carolina was probable brother of
Henry Starr of Maryland and was born in Maryland about 1740.
Having been apprentice to a saddler by whom he was badly treated
he absented to South Carolina where he "for a time & thence
went to Beech Island, Edgefield, bordering with Savannah river in
the west was part of South Carolina. Here he married in July
1775 and died 7 Jany 1821. He was boat wright and farmer. Our
informant thinks that John brothers William and Henry Starr. His
"or a son of John of County Cowan and afterwards of Berks
and Chester co. Penn has not been proved. His 1st wife was Mary
Hiles. After her death he married a 2nd wife. The children of

George Starr of Beech Island S. Carolina, son of John Starr of
Beech island S. C. was born at Beech island S. C. 13 July 1785 at
the latter place on 7 March 1811 he maried Eliza (born 31 Mch
1794) daughter of Gussias and Minty (Wise) Brown. He died 4
Paril 1834 and his widow resided in 1883 at Williston Creek S. C.
He followed the business of a farmer. The children of George and

John Starr of Augusta Georgia, son of John Starr & Mary Hiles
Starr of Beech Island SC was born 29 March 1788. He married
Elizabeth d. of John and Elizabeth (Brown) McDade of Richmond Co.
GA and died 25 March 1850. He was turnkey of the jail at Augusta
for nineteen years to the time of his death.

Henry Starr of Lumpkin, Stewart Co. GA, son of John and Mary
Hiles Starr of Beech Island S.C. was born 20 May 1795. He
married 30 Nov 1805 Susanna W. Barnes of Beech island who was
born 4 Nov 1800 and died 15 Nov 1863. Henry Starr removed to
Lumpkin in 1834 and died there 15 july 1836.
Their children were

Paladins & Princesses - Redefining masculinity in the 21st Century - an article by Simon and Tilda Mason.
As mankind progresses further into the 21st Century, it is hard to avoid the fact that as women have completely redefined their roles and status over the last century, the role and status of men has never been more uncertain. Men, it has often been said, are in crisis. They are failing at school, they are losing their jobs and their status as breadwinners and the value of the male sex within society is questionable. In an age where women can earn their own living, support a family and even have children without needing to involve a man at all, the status of men is under threat.
Men in general are aware of all this, but most stay silent. There are, however, exceptions and the object of this article is to look at two of these groups. Neither of them, we should say, are anti-women in the way that many new male rights groups are. Both the groups being examined are very different from each other, as you will see.
I (Tilda) travelled to a private estate in Texas and met a man who full titles and names are as follows: Sir Maximillian Plantagenet, Grand Master and Rector of the Most Holy Order of the Sacred Cross. He graciously allowed me to call him Sir Max during my stay with his Order.
"Sir Max" is actually a Texas Oil billionnaire. He has been married and divorced six times and each of his former wives has left with a six figure fortune. The failure of his marriages has lead Sir Max to examine his own personality and spirituality. He found these to be lacking and this lead him to setting up the Order.
The setting for the Order is one of the most impressive sights I have ever seen, for Sir Max designed, commissioned and built a massive medieval castle out of authentic medieval stone that was shipped over from Great Britain. "Camelot" (for that is the name Sir Max selected for the resulting edifice) is like a fairy tale palace. Stepping into it was like time travelling back into the middle ages.
There is no modern technology here. Everything is done as it would have been done in medieval times. The people who live in this fabricated throw back world are seperated by class and gender. At the top are Sir Max and his knights, all men aged between about 20 and 60, who spend most of their time practising swordplay and jousting, hunting or praying. Then there are artisans, merchants and servants who provide the infrastructure for this make believe world. Then there are the women who are mainly of two types - ladies who prance about in expensive dresses and steepled hats - and menial servants who make beds, prepare meals and do the laundry. Needless to say, without the modern labour saving devices available in our century, many tasks are time consuming and back breaking.
As a female guest, I was to be a lady, rather than a servant. I had to exchange my 21st Century clothes and accessories for some linen undergarments, a silk dress and a high steepled hat. My outfit made me appear more feminine, which I suppose was the point, and it was comfortable to wear. I then spent a week at the court of Sir Max. I took part in a hunt, medieval banquets, dances and watched the knights joust. It was all somewhat enjoyable, but the knights seemed to be having more fun.
The knights and, indeed, all men, were very deferential and courteous towards any woman. When I entered a room, all men present bowed to me and kissed my hand. At mealtimes, I was "looked after" by a solicitous young knight who would carve my beef for me and serve me dishes. But at the same time, I found it all demeaning. In this world, women were given respect and courtesy, but no say in how things were run here.
That was all decided by the Order, who met in secret at regular intervals. As only men could be knights of the Order, women were of course excluded. When I interviewed Sir Max, he explained to me that the Order's focus was on male bonding and spirituality. Men needed to go back to a simpler time to reconnect with masculine values that had been blurred in recent years.
What about the women? I asked. Sir Max said that women needed to go back to traditional feminine values, but that his Order was not the place for this. I was not sorry when the time came for me to hang up my steepled hat and return to the real world. Sir Max's "vision" of masculinity is too narrow and does little for women.
More attractive is a new movement, Princesses, which admittedly does not sound like having anything to do with men but which was founded by one. My husband, Simon, went along to take a look at them.
